* * * *

You can go and see your mummy soon.

Beneath the covers of her bed, Shania read the note again. Tears fell. That lovely little girl was going to save her somehow. She ripped the note up, like she’d done with all the others. Scrunching the pieces into her fist, she went into the bathroom, shut the door, and flushed the bits down the toilet. She hoped this room didn’t have any cameras, but if it did, she’d have been questioned about the letters already, wouldn’t she? They wouldn’t still send Anna down if they knew they were communicating. Did that mean the cameras didn’t record the footage? That gave her a measure of relief. The idea that the sex games had been stored somewhere had given her a dose of shame to contend with.

When David had first spoken to her through the hidden speakers, his disembodied voice had shit the life out of her. He’d told her the rules, how she’d be hurt if she tried to escape, how they’d go after her mother. While Mum wasn’t the best, Shania still loved her, and she had to keep her safe. She’d endured their depraved sexual kinks, had fought them like David had demanded. The only thing she hadn’t done was get pregnant. Maybe she couldn’t. They’d revealed their use for her two months after leaving her down here with minimal personal visits. They’d conversed through the speakers, and oddly, even though she loathed them, she’d come to look forward to the human contact.

Mum would have reported her missing by now. Were the police out there, searching for her? She imagined them poking in hedgerows and scouting grass verges. Coppers on doorsteps, asking questions. No one would know she was here unless they’d seen her walking down the street, but it hadn’t struck her as the kind of estate where folks nosed out of their windows. Posh nobs were private, weren’t they, and didn’t involve themselves in other people’s business.

But what if the police had come here? What if, by some stroke of luck, someone had seen her arriving on the Friday and Saturday nights? Shania’s shoulders slumped. David and Valandra were so sophisticated and believable they’d have no trouble convincing a police officer that they hadn’t seen her. Look how she’d fallen for their charms. How she’d thought she’d landed on her feet with this job, the couple too nice for words.

She collected the tampons, showered, then returned to the bedroom, getting dressed. She put her nightie and other washing in the machine, making it look like she’d obeyed Valandra. She made the bed and read for a while.

She all but jumped out of her skin when Anna appeared at the bedroom door.

“Mummy’s gone to the shops.”

Fear pervaded Shania’s whole body. “You shouldn’t be down here. Don’t let her catch you. Go. Hurry up! Go!”

Anna left.

But she didn’t lock the door.
